Performing Umrah or Hajj is a deeply spiritual journey and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many Muslims. While both pilgrimages involve sacred rituals in Makkah, they differ in obligation, timing, and steps. This comprehensive guide walks you through each stage of Umrah and Hajj, helping you prepare mentally, spiritually, and practically.
Understanding the Difference Between Umrah and Hajj
Before beginning the journey, it’s important to understand how Umrah and Hajj differ:

-
Hajj is an obligatory act of worship for Muslims who are physically and financially able, and it must be performed during specific days of Dhul-Hijjah.
-
Both pilgrimages involve similar rituals, but Hajj includes additional acts that span several days.

Certain actions such as cutting hair, wearing perfume, or arguing are prohibited in Ihram.
Step 3: Performing Tawaf (Circumambulation of the Kaaba)
Upon entering Masjid al-Haram in Makkah:
- Begin Tawaf by circling the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction.
- Start each round at the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad) if possible.
- Engage in supplication and remembrance of Allah throughout Tawaf.
Step 4: Performing Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah
After Tawaf:

Walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times.
-
This ritual commemorates Hajar’s search for water for her son Ismail (AS).
-
